Carl Ferland: Oppose Denny’s animal cruelty

AS A BOARD MEMBER OF THE DENNY’S FRANCHISE ASSOCIATION, CARL FERLAND CAN HELP END EXTREME CRUELTY
Carl Ferland is a Denny’s franchisee with a long history with the diner chain, dating back 50 years. He is also on the board of the Denny’s Franchise Association and a member of its Strategic Supply Chain Committee (SSCC).
A Food Logistics article from 2016 states that franchisees sign a purchasing agreement that designates the SSCC as its purchasing agent, agreeing to abide by and fulfill the purchase commitments made by the SSCC on franchisees behalf. This means that Carl Ferland has a significant influence over the products that end up in nearly all of Denny’s restaurants.
Currently, the diner chain purchases pig products from farms that keep pregnant mother pigs in cages so small they can’t turn around. Due to Denny’s refusal to address this extreme cruelty, a nationwide campaign is exposing this abuse and franchisees are facing the consequences through protests and harmful PR.
Ferland currently owns a Denny’s in Orlando, FL, hoping to make it the “best restaurant within the brand before he fully retires.” Yet, his legacy will be marred by the animal cruelty scandal plaguing Denny’s unless he takes a stand and addresses it now.

DENNY’S IS IGNORING public calls to end cages
In 2012, Denny’s made a public commitment to eliminate the cruel practice of caging pregnant pigs—just as their competitors have done—yet little progress has been made.
Being trapped in these cages is physically and emotionally devastating for these intelligent animals.
In the middle of a nationwide campaign calling for an end to gestation cages, with over 53,000 messages sent to Denny’s by the public, the company continues to ignore the issue and deletes questions about it from their customers on their social media pages.
Caging animals is illegal in 11 U.S. states and several countries. Removing these cages is the bare minimum Denny’s can do to reduce these animals’ suffering.
Carl Ferland was recently given a “Chairman Award” at the Denny’s Franchise Association Convention, where the CEO, Kelli Valade, described the recipients as embodying “our commitment to the quality and hospitality we have for our guests, setting a remarkable standard for our brand.”
What kind of standard are Ferland, the Strategic Supply Chain Committee, and Denny’s leadership setting by ignoring citizens asking them to eliminate this cruelty?

Carl Ferland, a member of the Strategic Supply Chain Committee, can help thousands of pregnant pigs suffering in tiny metal cages for Denny’s. Speaking up is what any decent person would do.
